Behind the Scenes of Clues

How is Clues improvised?

  • Each night a different actor will play the part of the murder victim
  • The role of the butler is shared by five of the actors
  • The characterizations of each of the six party guests will be completely unique, because those are based on suggestions given by YOU, the audience, before each show (show up early to participate!)
  • •Each of the clues is unique night-to-night (objects, drawings, sentences) as well as each of the three rooms (again, all provided by the audience)
  • •A surprise occurs at the end of Act I. To which character the surprise happens – that is a surprise to not only the audience, but each of the actors as well
  • •Most importantly, the identity of the murderer (revealed at the end of the show) is a surprise not only to each of the other party guests, but a surprise to the actor playing the murderers well!
  • Finally, as in all of improv-based theater, it is the small stuff that makes each show truly unique. The nuances of the unscripted dialogue, the unplanned word games and inter-character dynamics and character histories, and the organically-created running gags that are unique to each night are what make each of Clues’ performances unique and uniquely enjoyable, and are a major part of the reason we choose to continue to create improvisational theater all year round.
